This is an important week for me yet at the same time it is tinged with a bit of sadness. I will be focusing on victims this week at several events and while I am thrilled to be able to help those who have been hurt, used or abused, I am saddened by the fact that these victims are still out there and are forced to suffer.

Today (Tuesday) I held a press conference in Albany which was sponsored by Sanctuary for Families, the largest provider of services to victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking in the State, the New York Center for Juvenile Justice which advocates for improvements in our Juvenile Justice system and the New York State Anti-Trafficking Coalition, which represents over 100 organizations State-wide.

Speakers urged the legislature to pass the Trafficking Victims Protection and Justice Act. The TVPJA will strengthen New York laws to fight human trafficking by increasing protection for victims (particularly sexually exploited children), holding buyers and traffickers accountable and preventing the re-victimization of trafficking victims by the justice system.

Tomorrow, The Scarsdale Coalition on Family Violence will present Love Shouldn’t Hurt: Talking With Your Kids About Healthy Relationships at The Scarsdale Women’s Club (37 Drake Road). I’ll be there, too, because no one should have to live in fear of the people who are supposed to love them.

Finally, on Friday, I will be at People Are Not For Sale, a legislative breakfast and informative discussion sponsored by the Junior Leagues of Westchester County. There will be police officials and human rights activists on hand to discuss this ugly and disgusting issue which continues to be a stain on our community and communities throughout the state.
